Coca farmer Evo Morales, who came to prominence as a leader of the coca
growers union, won Bolivia’s Dec. 18 presidential election with a solid
majority vote. The first indigenous person and the first cocalero, or
coca farmer, to ascend to the presidency, he soundly defeated
former Bolivian president Jorge Quiroga and political newcomer Samuel
